Why?

Why do hotels put your key card in a little sleeve?

You check in, you grab your luggage, walk down the hall to your room then you have to juggle your luggage, remember which pocket you put the key card in then with one hand try to get the key card out of the sleeve. Grrrrrr.

I mean I guess the sleeve is handy for writing your room number on but really? How many people forget their room number from the front desk to the room? How many people have to fumble one handed with the stupid sleeve? I bet the fumblers outweigh the forgetters by 10 to one.

I think they should stop favoring the forgetters and give us fumblers the break! :)

i doubt very highly that you're a "fumbler" but I agree with the little sleeve thingie....are they afraid it'll get dirty? cold? what gives?

and why are you in a hotel? business or pleasure? I stayed in an embassy Suite one time that was the BOMB! it was great.......

I'd say they favor the forgetters because they are the ones that bother the front desk because they have to go back and ask again.
Also - I'll tell you who forgets the room number from the front desk to the room - Single Moms who have their children with them! Or maybe they didn't actually forget, but they didn't even HEAR the room number in the first place over the children, and in a hurry to get the tired cranky kids in the room, didn't even notice that they didn't hear the room number.
Just a thought... not that anything like that could ever possibly happen to me. :)

So then you go out to your meeting, and afterwards out for dinner... with precocktail drinks, wine with dinner, and port to follow. Then out to the bars, where you get a little sloshed. At that point you're lucky if one person in your group can even remember which HOTEL you're staying at, let alone what floor or room. And since the true positive firing rate of the cards is only about 50%, trying every door in the hotel is NOT recommended (and trying it twice at that time of the morning may piss off the neighbours) "Excuse me, but do you know where I live?" Yah... maybe they should just tattoo it on your forearm.
So here's a better plan -- thumbprint reader to open the door to the hotel, which TELLS you which room you're going to, and unlocks the door when you get there?

"How many people forget their room number from the front desk to the room?" -- that would be me. And what Erika said. So are you gonna tell us where you are?

um
i'm a forgetter. you are trying to screw me out of any chance I've got at getting to the right room?
you COULD always set down your luggage, and quit fumbling.

since all the hallways are under video surveillance they probably do that just to see you trying to handle getting into your room after a few drinks.

Actually, there was one time i wish I had sleeve for my key. I sent my very, very drunk sister-in-law back to our hotel room before the rest of us were done at the bar and she wandered around the hotel for an hour sticking her key in multiple doors (that sounds kinda dirty) before she finally had to go to the front desk and ask which room we were in!
